In this article, we will talk about what you can see on the Great Wall of China . This text is written on the basis of the impressions of our site's reviewers who visited the site of the Badaling wall north of Beijing .
We understand that many of the readers want to see the photo and make up their minds. We appreciate your time and immediately give links to photo galleries. See: gallery photo 1 , gallery photo 2 , gallery photo 3 .
So, you got to the Great Wall of China. You have a goal, and it does not matter how - you arrived in Badalin on your own or ordered an excursion in Beijing . By the way, in a separate article we considered all the advantages and disadvantages of each method, read the page: "The Chinese Wall is an independent VS excursion ".
Do not immediately run to the cashier and buy a ticket, because already on the way to the wall there are many interesting things. On the square on the approach to the wall are several interesting statues and sculptural compositions. We'll talk about them in detail.
The first statue, to which everyone draws attention, depicts a formidable Chinese on horseback. Unfortunately, no one signed it, even with Chinese characters there are no inscriptions. Many tourists are photographed against the background of this man's sculpture, but very few people know who it is.
We will tell. This Ki Jiguang is a very famous people's hero and a Ming dynasty general. He was born in 1528 and died in 1588.
His first important act was the victory over Japanese pirates. When we talk about pirates, we imagine a small team on a ship that swims the seas and robs merchants.
Japanese pirates of the 16th century were somewhat different, they were organized gangs to several thousand people who not only plundered ships, but also captured entire provinces. The situation with Japanese pirates in 1553 in China was terrible, they seized the provinces on the coast and completely controlled the seas. Ki Jiguang smashed them on land, built a fleet and defeated pirates on the sea.
It was not a small special operation, but a real big war. Then China threw all forces into the fight against the pirates, and even the monks of Shao Lin took part in the battles and almost all died.
The second important achievement is the reconstruction of the Great Wall of China and the protection of China from the threat of the Mongols and other nomads in the north. The raids of the nomads were then a very serious threat, and the wall was for them rather a little hindrance than a serious obstacle.
The Great Wall of China, which you see now, is the fruit of his efforts. He fortified the wall in the area of Beijing, made it completely stone, built watchtowers and organized garrisons. Naturally, the largest statue on the approach to the site of the wall of Badaling is dedicated to him.
As is known, gunpowder was invented in China for a very long time. For a long time it had no military use, and was used for entertainment purposes. Firearms and artillery were also first invented by the Chinese, and actively used guns in protecting important areas of the Great Wall of China.
Copies of the ancient cannons that were used to defend the wall are now on display in front of the entrance to the Badaling wall site. The guns can be touched, they can be photographed, the visitors climb them for good photos. Do not be shy, do not try to carry them away.
The Great Wall is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Near the wall hangs a corresponding sign, although it is difficult to call this word, it is more than two meters in height.
None of the tourists does not notice it, it seemed, we are the only ones who even noticed its existence.
In addition to this tablet, there are several clothing stores, several cafes and souvenir shops on the square. Prices are always very high, and the assortment is standard, such Chinese souvenirs can be bought in Beijing 3-4 times cheaper. We recommend buying something here only in case of urgent need.
In a cafe a serving of rice with vegetables (without meat) costs 30 yuan , which is twice as expensive as in Beijing. The hat can cost more than 100 yuan, which is expensive even for Moscow. On an excursion to the Great Wall of China, we recommend taking water and snack food with you. Also remember that Badaling and Mutianuy are in the mountains, and there is a constant strong wind. In the summer months it is warm here, but at the rest of the time, heat up and take a hat with you. In our photo galleries you will see many tourists who did not follow this advice, and their faces are not at all happy. We also recommend reading our useful article " What to bring to China ", where we told about several subjects that tourists will need.
On the approach to the wall there are several more statues and inscriptions about the history of China, on which we will not dwell. You can see them in the photo galleries.
Also this area can be viewed in our gallery of videos by this link . The gallery contains videos not only from the square, but also from the wall itself.
Before you get on the Great Wall of China itself, you need to buy a ticket. We did not notice the big queues at the ticket offices, although they came to Badaling on Saturday. You can see the queue in the photo below. The lack of queues is not surprising, because most of the tourists come here as part of organized groups, they do not need a ticket. Independent tourists can buy a ticket on the train to Badalin.
The ticket costs 45 yuan, it is executed in the form of a postcard, which you can send home (pictured below). We can not say whether there is a post nearby, according to the logic should be, but we did not find it. Tickets are sold only at the checkout, no dealers are present, followed by guards who are on duty on the square and on the wall itself.
In this ticket there is one extremely curious feature. Note the two rows of numbers below and below them a strip that can be erased, usually it is erased with a coin. It looks like a lottery ticket, is not it? This is a lottery ticket, and most tickets or checks in China are also, in combination, lottery tickets. We described this in detail in the article " Tipping in China and a lottery checks ."
We have a lot of familiar Chinese, they all won a maximum of 10 yuan, which can be put on the mobile phone account. You can erase the inscription, maybe you'll be lucky.
Once you pass security control, you will need to decide where to go first - right or left.
The section of the wall in Badaling is open to tourists for a length of 1700 meters - 1000 meters to the right and 700 meters to the left. If you hoped for hours of walking on the wall, then we will disappoint you. Although there is a way to walk along the wall for a very long time, there is a special excursion during which you will have to walk along a wall of 5.5 kilometers, we wrote about it in the article about excursions in Beijing .
On the wall, tourists stroll, inspect this grandiose structure and watch stunning views of the mountains, some of which are fascinating (pictured below).
Magnificent views open from those places where there is a serious drop in altitude. The entrance to the wall is at the lowest point. Wherever you go, you will go up, and sometimes the angle of the wall is up to 45 degrees. Reserve yourself for the campaign.
The steps are not everywhere. We recommend walking only in dry weather, in damp weather the wall in this place may well turn into a racing track. Along the difficult sections there are handrails, which slightly facilitates the ascent, and makes the descents safer.
The photo on the left shows this rise clearly. The main thing - take your time and be careful when lifting. The section of the wall is not so long, and in any case you will have time to go both ways to the end, even if you do not hurry anywhere. In the course of an organized excursion for an inspection, 2 hours are given, and for an independent trip your time is not limited at all.
A strong wind often blows on the wall, because we are in a mountainous area. We advise the best way at least temporarily to hide from the wind - to hide in the watchtower.
If it becomes very hard for you, then think about the soldiers who were on duty here all day and night, looking out for the enemy. The soldiers are on duty now, but the Chinese guardsmen are already guarding the wall itself.
Here is the end of the wall, or rather, the gap (in the photo below). As you understand, here for tourists the route ends. Of course, our article here does not end, read the sequel after the photo below.
At the end of the Badaling site, on both sides there are high-speed descents down. For an additional fee you can ride on this attraction. We can not say anything about it, because we did not go down ourselves. The faces of tourists after the descent were extremely cheerful, from which it can be concluded that this attraction is interesting.
Disgusting on the wall - this is a huge amount of inscriptions that unscrupulous tourists make on the stones. The security service takes all sharp objects, guardsmen are constantly on duty on the wall, and the inscriptions all the same appear more and more new.
Most of the inscriptions are made with Chinese characters, but we also found a few words in Russian in Russian.
We turn to Ira. Dear Ira! Do not scratch more inscriptions on the Great Wall of China.
Walking in both directions and looking at all the towers, you can go back to the middle and go to the exit. There is nothing more to look at the wall. There are also basements here, but they are all closed to the public.
If you are still hungry to impressions and attractions, then there is one more place you can go to. It is a memorial and museum of Zana Tianyu.
Zan Tianyu was the founder of railways in China, and he personally supervised the construction of one of the first railway tunnels. This tunnel was dug here - in Badalina. It and now you can see, in our gallery there is a photo.
Once again, we provide links to our photo galleries, there are many interesting moments. Photo gallery from the Great Wall of China: part 1 , part 2 , part 3 .
We wish you successful trips to the sights of China, and read our articles about this country ( links below ).
