Zoo Phrygia in Tunisia
Excursion to the Zoo Phrygia is one of the most popular among Russian tourists in Tunisia. This is not surprising, at Tunisian resorts very few family entertainment, when it will be interesting for both children and adults. If you do not take water parks, then except the zoo of Phrygia, you can remember only the park Carthage Land . There is also the Crocodile farm , but it is located on the island of Djerba in Southern Tunisia far from the main resort areas.
To go or not to go?
This question is often asked of tourists. Our subjective opinion is that it is necessary to go for the following reasons:
- in the zoo of Phrygia, you can find several species of animals that are not found in Russian zoos;
- The tour lasts half a day, you will not have to be distracted from the paid All Inclusive for a long time;
- Zoo Phrygia is located close to the main resorts, you will have to drive within an hour;
- if you want to go on your own, you can quickly and inexpensively take a taxi, especially if you are traveling 3-4 people;
Facts and Figures
This zoo opened on November 11, 2000. Here contain more than 420 animals of 61 species. The total area is 36 hectares. In 2010 the first dolphinarium was opened here.
The Phrygia Zoo is managed jointly by the Ministry of Forestry of Tunisia and the Paris Zoo. The aim of their work was to preserve the endangered species of animals and their subsequent release into the natural wild environment.
Phrygia is located near the town of Bophich, it is in the middle between the resorts of Sousse and Hammamet. Focus on the map of the resorts of Tunisia . Most tourists come here during an organized excursion.
Excursions to the Zoo of Phrygia
The tour is called "Phrygia Zoo and fur seals show". The name itself is already incorrect, as the cat performs solo. This show is not some kind of a separate attraction, but is arranged in the park several times a day, it is not necessary to pay for it separately. This postscript of the "fur seals show" is nothing more than a marketing move to overstate the value of the excursion.
The excursion is in two versions. Initially, tourists are taken to the zoo, and then lead in the first case to dinner with dances of the Zulus, in the second case to the dolphinarium. Visiting both the Zulu show and the show in the Dolphinarium for one trip is difficult, as these events overlap in time.
The vast majority of tourists go to the option with dinner from the Zulu show. The choice is reasonable, if you read the reviews about the dolphinarium, then few of those who visited it remain ecstatic. On the Zulu show, we will not talk in detail on this page, we have a separate review of this " Phrygia - Zulu show ".
Tourists are taken from the hotels around 13:00 - 14:30. Then they go to the zoo, there is 1,5-2 hours to see the animals. Around 17-30 dinner begins. About 19-00 the bus leaves back. This is an approximate schedule, it can be different, depending on the hotel stay and tour operator, eliminating the tour.
Important advice! The guide will say that by a certain time all tourists need to finish the inspection of the zoo, gather in the square near the entrance and wait for dinner with the Zulus. Pay attention to the word "wait." If you come to this time, as the guide said, you really will wait. The restaurant seats 450 people, and tourists only fill it in 20-30 minutes. Take your time, watch the animals calmly and without haste, and the Zulus will not go away anywhere.
How to get there by yourself
The first option is to take the train. Near the park there is a railway station "Parc Friguia" (in the photo below, click on the photo to enlarge). We warn that this is a secondary station, very few trains stop at it. Planning a trip to Phrygia by train should be carefully, use the timetable on the official website of the Tunisian Railways. On how to do this, read in our article " Trains in Tunisia - an instruction for tourists ."
Another important warning. On the official website of Phrygia there is a train schedule, do not use it in any way, it is not up to date. Use only the official website of the Tunisian Railways.
Buses run past the zoo, but we do not recommend them to use the tourists. Finding your stop to a tourist is difficult, and it's even more difficult to ask the driver and people near, because few of the Russians know Arabic or French. If you still decide to take the bus, then read our article " Buses in Tunisia - an instruction for tourists ."
The easiest way to get there is by taxi, for the price of a taxi in Tunisia is low. From Yasmine Hammamet ride 22 kilometers, the trip will cost 15 Tunisian dinars . From Hammamet, 32 kilometers and 25 dinars. Of Nabel, 53 kilometers and 40 dinars. From El Kantaoui, 50 kilometers and 40 dinars. From Suss 56 kilometers and 45 dinars.
If you pay the driver a wait and on his own car go back, then every taxi driver will agree. But if you want to get there and release the taxi driver, not everyone will agree and you will have to negotiate a fixed price, which will be higher than the cost of the trip by the meter. Prepare for this turn of events.
Price of entrance and excursion
In 2017, the entrance costs 11 dinars per adult visitor, 7 dinars per child. To participants of the organized excursion to buy the ticket it is not necessary, all is paid by the organizer of excursion.
There are discounts for groups of visitors from 10 people. In this case, the entrance will cost 8 dinars and below. A separate payment for swimming with dolphins is worth 100 dinars.
Prepare for extra expenses in the park. Feed the giraffe, touch the turtle, ride a camel or a donkey and much more. All this is paid separately, from 1 to 3 dinars.
The tour costs from 45 to 60 US dollars. This tour is sold by all tour operators and excursion agencies without exception. By popularity with it, only the tour " Carthage - Sidi Bou Said - Tunisia" can compete.
In the summer: from 9:00 to 17:00. In the winter: from 9:00 to 16:00.
The zoo is closed on Mondays, except Mondays on holidays and school holidays, but in the summer holidays on Mondays the park is closed. The last phrase, of course, puts many readers at a dead end. Let's just say: do not try to get to Phrygia Park on Monday at all.
What to watch
The beasts here look nice. Lions, tigers, giraffes and other animals are kept in spacious enclosures. There are zoos where it is a pity animals, huddling in cells of 3x3 meters. We will dwell in detail on those species that are difficult to meet in Russian zoos.
The desert fox Phenec
Very interesting animal. It is not only the smallest fox, but also the smallest member of the canine family in general.
Pay attention to the huge (in comparison with the size of the body) ears. Fenech hunts insects and reptiles in the desert, such ears are needed for the animal to track down prey. These ears serve to cool the body in the heat, it's a kind of radiator.
Fenech is one of the symbols of Tunisia. His photo from the park of Phrygia in the photo on the right, click on the photo to enlarge.
Funny animals who like to stand on their hind legs, so they watch if predators do not approach. In the wild, the meerkats live in colonies, and about a dozen in the zoo of Phrygia. They are comfortable here.
Meerkats are famous for their resistance to the poisons of scorpions and snakes. They are great experts in hunting for scorpions, they manage to bite their tails.
Lovely Australian kangaroos, kids really like. We will not talk about them in detail, these animals are well known to readers.
This is a close relative of the camel, the lamas live in South America.
Llamas were domesticated by the Inca Indians, used as pack animals in the mountains. Unlike the camels we know, Lamas live in the mountains, not in the desert. See this animal in the photo on the left, click on the photo to enlarge.
When children see these animals, they immediately shout: "King Julian! King Julian! ". Probably, all the readers remember the films "Madagascar" and "Penguins of Madagascar."
These are Madagascar lemurs, very active little animals. Their aviary is located right near the entrance, do not rush to leave the zoo, better admire their games.
About the remaining inhabitants of the zoo Phrygia, we will not tell you in detail, they are well known to tourists. See below photo gallery. After the gallery we will continue our story.
Entourage and decoration
Phrygia is also pleased with the beautiful design. Throughout the park exhibited figures of African or gods, or evil spirits. Wooden carved benches are convenient for visitors. It is interesting here, you can make a lot of good photos.
Show of sea lions
It is held on schedule. In the summer at 10:00, 15:00 and 17:00. In the winter at 10:00, 13:00 and 15:00. This schedule can change, be sure to look at the information from ticket offices to get on the show. A small amphitheater where this show is held is 30 meters from the entrance, go straight, do not miss it.
If you listen to the feedback of tourists about this action, then, most likely, you will hear "Not bad, but nothing special". If you miss it by accident, do not be sorry.
Tips for tourists
- the toilet is near the entrance (exit);
- store water, you can buy it in cafes and eateries in the park, but the prices are very high, two to three times more expensive than in the resort areas;
- Always wear a hat, Tunisian weather can be insidious;
- you will have to walk a lot, wear comfortable and necessarily different shoes;
- wear clothes with closed shoulders, there are almost no canopies in the park and almost all the time will have to be under the open sun, as if not to burn.
