Four groups of Egyptian resorts
Traditionally, all the resorts of Egypt are divided by geography into four groups. Do not be surprised if two of them you do not know, few Russian tourists have heard of the Suez and Mediterranean groups. Let's talk about each in detail.
Group "Red Sea"
This is the largest group of resorts in Egypt, both in the number of resort cities, and in the number of rooms in hotels. The center of this group is the city of Hurghada .
The group received its name not from the sea, but from the governorate "Red Sea", in which all these resorts are located. Governorate is a unit of administrative division in Egypt, an analogue of regions or districts in our country.
Hurghada is the largest city and resort in the region, and the capital of its governorate. The number of accredited hotels here is already approaching the figure of 200.
Around Hurghada there are several small resort areas. The three most interesting of them are El Gouna , Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay . They are interesting in that each of these resorts is built according to a single plan under the management of development companies.
All of them were planned as fashionable rest places for wealthy tourists, but they turned out to be "strong middles". Only the Soma Bay resort was able to retain some element of elitism, but only within the Soma peninsula.
Resorts Makadi Bay and Safaga are considered inexpensive places for beach holidays without any frills. Only Makadi Bay boasts its large water park - Makadi Water World .
This group is served by two international airports, the first is in Hurghada itself, the second in the south near the city of Marsa Alam . About the airport Marsa Alam Russian tourists can not remember, since charter flights from Russia now (article published in 2015) do not arrive here. Before any resort will have to go on a tourist bus from Hurghada. Some hotels will have to travel long enough.
Look below the table with the distance and travel time to each of the resorts from the airport of Hurghada.
| El Gouna || Sahl Hasheesh || Makadi Bay || Soma Bay || Safaga || El Qusair || Marsa Alam |
| 34 km || 24 km || 32 km || 52 km || 56 km || 140 km || 275 km |
| 25 min || 20 minutes || 25 min || 40 min || 45 min || 1 hour 45 minutes || 3 hours 30 minutes |
And the last resort in this group, which we have not yet mentioned, is El-Kusair . It is considered a "paradise", where the sea is clean and the coral reefs are full of living creatures. This is a great place for diving enthusiasts and just want to disconnect from everyday life and lie on the beach. If you are ready to go for two hours on the bus there and two back for this, then this is a good choice.
Its center is the famous Sharm el-Sheikh , the second-largest resort city of Egypt on the Red Sea. An interesting fact - the city and resort of Sharm El Sheikh was built not by Egyptians, but by Israelis. After the "six-day war" in 1967, the entire Sinai peninsula passed under Israeli control.
The Israelis built a military airfield, now called "Sharm El Sheikh International Airport", built the first hotels and ennobled the beaches. In 1982, the Sinai Peninsula passed back under the control of Egypt. The Egyptians continued the development of the resort.
The second famous resort of this group is Dahab . This is the best place in Egypt for water sports. There is always a wind and a calm sea - ideal for windsurfing, kiteboarding and sailing on yachts.
The next resort of Nuweiba is small in size and well suited for a relaxing holiday on the beach. Also, this is a great starting point for excursions to Mount Sinai , St. Catherine's Monastery and the Color Canyon .
Taba Resort is valuable for tourists due to its proximity to Jordan and Israel. If you decide to see the famous city of Petra carved into the rock (see photo ), or you are interested in Jerusalem or the Dead Sea, then Taba will be an ideal choice.
Another feature of the Sinai group of resorts is the opportunity to get a " Sinai stamp " at the entrance, rather than paying $ 25 for a visa to Egypt. But it is worth remembering that with this stamp in your passport you can not leave the Sinai peninsula, you will have to forget about the excursions to the Great Egyptian pyramids .
Sinai group of resorts are served by two airports. The first is in Sharm El-Sheikh, and the second is in the city of Taba. Russian tourists should not be deluded, since aircraft from Russia do not fly to Tabu. In any case, have to go to any resort of Sinai from Sharm el-Sheikh. Below, see the table of distances and travel time from Sharm El Sheikh airport.
| Dahab || Nuweiba || Taba |
| 90 km || 145 km || 220 km |
| 1 hour 10 min || 1 hour 50 min || 2 hours 45 minutes |
A feature of the Sinai group, which we have not yet named, is a large deficit of sights. From here it is very far to Cairo, and to Luxor even further. When visiting these resorts, you should not look to see the Karnak Temple or the Valley of the Kings . You can buy an excursion to Cairo, but you have to fly by plane, which is quite expensive, or go 7 hours by bus, which is tedious. For these purposes there is another group of resorts, about which below.
But modern entertainment in Sharm El Sheikh is enough. There are discos and nightclubs. Children will be interested in water parks, the largest and most interesting of them - Albatros Aqua Blue and Cleo Park .
She is the smallest of all. The total number of hotels in all the resorts of this group "does not hold out" even to 50. However, this does not mean that there is something bad here. On the contrary, many industry experts say that the resorts of the Suez Group are a bright future for the tourism industry in Egypt.
While the Egyptian government does not see this future. Local resorts are not given tax breaks, do not supply with investments and are in no hurry to create an adequate infrastructure for tourism. The development of tourism in the region occurs on its own, and it passes slowly.
On advertising money from local hoteliers also do not, and the tourist flow of foreigners here is growing at a slow pace.
The main resort of the Suez group is Ain-Sokhna . It is not only a resort, but also a major port city, where tourists can see the real life of the Egyptians.
The other two resorts - Suez and Zaafarana, here tourism began to develop only recently.
The proximity to Cairo is the gigantic advantage of the resorts of the Suez group. This is an opportunity to see the Egyptian Pyramids, the sights of Cairo and the city of Alexandria , and then a couple of hours to reach the hotel on the beautiful Red Sea beach. This is the perfect combination of cultural and beach holidays without unnecessary loss of time in buses, without the strain of strength and nerves, without unnecessary financial costs.
The main arrival airport for the resorts of the Suez Group is the air port of Cairo. While local resorts are too small to have their own airports. In addition, Cairo does not go far. See the table of distances and travel times below.
| Suez || Ain Sokhna || Zaafarana |
| 127 km || 139 km || 209 km |
| 1 hour 40 min || 1 hour 50 min || 2 hours 40 minutes |
We hope that the Suez group will develop rapidly and become no less popular than Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh. With such an arrangement, these resorts accurately expect great success, it's only a matter of time. For a long time these hotels were in demand only among the Egyptians, but now the situation is changing, then more and more foreigners are vacationing.
Here the situation does not change. These hotels have been geared towards the Egyptians and their summer vacation, and have remained so. There are hardly any foreigners here, and the Egyptians do not want to attract us here. The resorts of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea and so "crammed to the eyeballs" in the summer season, and in winter they do not work, because the sea is too cold.
We will not elaborate on the Mediterranean resort cities of Egypt. Above you will find a link to an article about them.
