At first the museum building was located near the Ezbekie gardens, but soon the museum was closed, and the valuables were transferred to the citadel of Cairo for security reasons. In 1858, the Egyptian authorities opened the museum again, allocating for its needs a warehouse building in the Bulak district. The director has already become Augustus Mariet.
The Bulak district is located directly on the bank of the Nile, and in 1878 the museum was badly damaged by the flood of the river, some of the exhibits were lost irrevocably. In 1891, the whole collection even had to be evacuated to the former royal palace, where it lay until 1902.
In 1902 this building was built (pictured on the left), where the Cairo Museum is located now. It is located on Tahrir Square - the main one in Cairo.
The Cairo Museum is relatively small in size - only 15,000 square meters. Visitors it seems very close. This is not surprising, because the building was built in 1902, when the collection was much smaller than the current one.
The richest in artifacts were found later - the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922, and the royal necropolis in Tanis was discovered in 1939. As a result of these findings, the Cairo Museum was filled with artifacts, they were placed in the building as compactly as possible, hence the narrowness.
An interesting fact is that until 1996 the whole system of guarding the Cairo Museum consisted of a guard and a door that was closed for the night. In 1996, the thief hid in the building for the night and stole several valuable exhibits. Since that moment, the administration has started installing alarm and new lighting.
In 2011, during the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, the museum was plundered. 50 valuable exhibits were lost, 25 of which were later found and returned. Also, the looters destroyed two mummies.
