Necropolis Dahshur has dimensions of 3.5 to 1.5 kilometers. If you want to see everything here, then prepare to walk a lot.
Where to find and how to get there
Dahshur is located 30 kilometers south of the city of Giza, 8 kilometers south of Sakkar necropolis.
If you count from the city of Cairo, then the distance is about 40 kilometers. Cairo is a huge city, and from one of its suburbs you can go to Dahshur 35 kilometers, and from another 55.
You can get here by taxi , which will cost about 100 Egyptian pounds . Also, you can get to the neighboring settlements by bus, but you will have to walk several kilometers to the necropolis. We do not recommend this method to tourists.
The easiest and cheapest way is to join a tour group. Only for 50 US dollars for one day you can see Giza, Sakkara and Dahshur. That is, you look at all the biggest and interesting pyramids in Egypt.
If you still came to Dahshur by taxi, then remember that catching a return taxi will be very difficult. Easier and safer to pay the driver a simple, usually 20-30 pounds per hour.
What to watch - the two pyramids of Snoofru
The first pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty built two pyramids in Dahshur. The reasons for this decision of Pharaoh Snofru (ruled around 2600 BC) by historians have not been clarified.
The first is that the Broken Pyramid is named because of its shape. The angle of slope of the faces in its lower part is equal to 53 degrees, and in the upper part of the structure the builders reduced it to 42 degrees.
The reasons for this decision by historians have not been precisely established. We discussed the hypotheses in detail in the main article "The Broken Pyramid ".
The broken pyramid is interesting for tourists also because it almost completely preserves the lining of white Tursky limestone.
There is no second such pyramid in Egypt. Facing now you can see only on the top of the pyramid of Chephren and on the lower tiers of the Menkaure pyramid .
Tourists are not allowed inside the Broken Pyramid, but you can descend into the second pyramid of Pharaoh Snofru.
The second - the Pink Pyramid is named because of the color of the shade of limestone from which it is collected. This shade is difficult to notice, outwardly it differs little from the classical monuments of ancient Egypt from limestone.
The pink pyramid is interesting because all tourists are inside and free of charge. Recall that in Giza you can go down only to the pyramid of Cheops and for a fee.
Descend into the pyramid is difficult because of very narrow aisles, but impressions of funerary cameras are worth it. In detail, we wrote about all this in the article "The Pink Pyramid ".
After Snofru, his son Cheops (Khufu) used the experience of his father's builders to erect his famous burial vault, but not in Dahshur, but on the Giza plateau. Dahshur ceased to be a royal necropolis.
In the era of the First Transition Period, all pyramids were robbed. Modern archaeologists have not found the mummies of the pharaohs of the Ancient Kingdom, nor the sarcophagi, nor the treasures.
From the point of view of historical science, the Broken and Pink Pyramids are of little interest. There are no inscriptions inside, no artifacts were found inside. These monuments do not give us any idea of the life and beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. They simply stand and are silent, and in the literal and figurative meanings of this expression.
