Where is better to go to Egypt - Sharm el-Sheikh
The question "Where to go to Egypt?" For many is decided in favor of Sharm el-Sheikh. This city in Egypt is not very small, only about 50,000 people live in the city itself. Even in the list of cities near Moscow he would not have entered the top ten. It is smaller than Hurghada, which we talked about in the first part of our review of the resorts of Egypt .
The city itself consists almost entirely of hotels, sometimes it seems that in addition to hotels there are no other buildings in it.
Sharm el-Sheikh is located on the Sinai peninsula (also called the Sinai peninsula), which for a long time was a "stumbling block" between Egypt and Israel.
During the last war, which took place in 1967, it is called "six-day", Israel captured the peninsula, and returned to Egypt only in 1979 (the year of signing the treaty).
It was the Israelis who were the first to build hotels for tourists here. They were the first to understand how well Sharm el-Sheikh is and how high is the potential for tourism development.
Now it is a well-developed resort. Prices for rest here do not exceed Hurghada, in general, the prices of all resorts in Egypt are about the same.
Sharm El Sheikh has its own international airport, with two terminals. For the airport of the tourist zone is a rarity, it is planned to create a third terminal.
This airport was built by the Israeli military, and it used to be a military base. Indeed, there is no better place for a military airfield in the district.
Russian tourists buy a visa on the spot, right at the airport, and for citizens of the European Union there is a visa-free regime for up to 14 days, we hope that this will also be introduced for Russians.
Sharm el-Sheikh is a year-round resort. On the weather at the resorts of the Red Sea, read in our review of the weather in Egypt .
The beaches here are clean, but not all beaches can go into the sea without special shoes. Without shoes, you can go to the sea in the Sharm el-Maya Bay and Naama Bay, all the other beaches have corals and sea urchins, shoes are required.
Special safety shoes can be bought at the hotel and take there on bail. It costs about 20 US dollars for a couple.
In Sharm el-Sheikh, there are paid beaches, such as El Fanar. On paid beaches, parties are held, alcohol is sold, but, in general, there is nothing remarkable about them.
It is far from the main attractions of Egypt, but on the Sinai Peninsula there are important places of interest.
Mount Sinai is located very close to Sharm el-Sheikh. Recall that it was on Mount Sinai that the prophet Moses received from God a tablet with commandments. Immediately he hid from the traitors in the cave.
Now every tourist can go to Mount Sinai and meet the sunrise there, this is the most popular excursion.
Two paths lead to the mountain, the first is long and simple, the second is shorter, but more steep. Usually, on a short walk, pilgrims walk along long tourists.
At the foot of Mount Sinai is the monastery of St. Helena, the second significant attraction in the district. Also, at the foot is the cave temple of the prophet Elijah, the chapel of the Virgin. On the mountain itself there is a church - the Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.
All the important sights of Sharm el-Sheikh can be visited during one excursion, which is very convenient.
In the city itself there are several interesting places. The "old town" district with the largest eastern market in the district, which is called the "old market".
Now this market is more focused on tourists, many traders speak Russian well, some even accept Russian rubles.
In addition to souvenirs, you can buy fruit, eat in a cafe with national cuisine and look at the stone rocks, which are illuminated at night.
We recommend you try freshly squeezed cane juice, which is called asyr-asyp.
The Ras Mohamed area will be of interest to nature lovers. It is a national park, mangroves grow here, trees grow right in the sea. More than 100 species of corals, countless species of tropical fish. In addition to animals and fish, there is a bay in which water is 2 times more salty than in the sea, next to salt springs.
On the territory of the park there is a unique coral reef that comes out of the water, its age is estimated at 2 billion years. Remember that the national park is protected by the state, and here it is better not to touch anything.
For amateurs of amusement parks in Sharm el-Sheikh there is a very interesting place. Water park Cleopark, which is stylized to ancient Egypt, even the name consists of two words Cleopatra and the park.
For Egypt, it is very large, more than ten hills, a river and waterfalls. The total area of the park is about 50,000 square meters. On the territory there are several restaurants and a children's area.
Entrance to the park costs $ 30 for adults and $ 20 for children.
And the last thing we have to tell, and we are accustomed to telling everything, are the negative events in Sharm El Sheikh. In 2005, there was the largest terrorist act in the history of Egypt.
On July 23, 2005, three bombs exploded from four, prepared by terrorists. July 23 is the day of the 1952 revolution, when the monarchy was overthrown in Egypt. This day was not chosen by chance, they were fighters for national identity, they do not like tourists.
Totally 88 people died, most of them Egyptians, about 200 people were injured. One of the bombs the police managed to find and localize. The largest explosive device was activated right in the lobby of the hotel Gazala Gardens.
With these facts, we are not trying to show that Sharm El-Sheikh is dangerous. At that time, all of Egypt was under a terrorist threat. In 2004-2005, there were other attacks, fortunately, the victims were few. Now for a long time nothing like this has happened.
