The most famous Egyptian cigarettes are Cleopatra
Queen Cleopatra is the most famous Egyptian . In her honor in Egypt, called hotels, streets, coves and ships. The most famous Egyptian cigarettes also bear her name.
This brand appeared in 1962, and a curious story is associated with it.
In 1962, at an international exhibition in Cairo, the Egyptians and Syrians organized a pavilion where they exhibited samples of their tobacco products.
The exhibition and this pavilion was visited by President Nasser himself. Nasser himself was an avid smoker, but refused local cigarettes. He pulled a pack of American cigarettes from KENT brand.
Of course, it was uncomfortable for President Nasser, and he explained that he reacted very badly to changing the brand of tobacco, and he had long been accustomed to KENT products. In justification he said that he would gladly transfer to Egyptian cigarettes, if the industry starts to produce a brand that repeats KENT.
Specialists of the tobacco industry in Egypt have accepted this excuse as a guide to action. They bought several blocks of KENT on the black market, analyzed and created their own brand, the closest in composition, taste and appearance.
The name came by itself, because just at this time there was a film "Cleopatra" with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the lead roles. So the brand "Cleopatra" was born.
The first four blocks were sent as a gift to the president. But, he did not fulfill his promise and did not switch to smoking these cigarettes. He continued to smoke smuggled American cigarettes.
This story was told by a former employee of the National Chamber of Tobacco of Egypt - Kamal Katba. His memories can be trusted.
Fighting smoking in Egypt
For a long time the government of Egypt was not up to the fight against smoking, and Egyptians smoked a little. In recent years, the problem has worsened.
In Egypt, the authorities do not impose any serious restrictions on smokers, but try to influence economic measures. The past increase in taxes, excises and duties occurred in July 2014, but it is clearly not the last.
Of course, in Egypt, tobacco advertising is banned completely. You can not smoke in medical and children's institutions, you can not smoke in transport and public institutions. But in hotels you can smoke both on the balconies and in the rooms. In bars and restaurants smoking is allowed. We'll see if we see, maybe new prohibitions will be introduced.
