The Egyptian resort of Taba raises the most doubts among Russian tourists. Every second negative review of hotels in Taba begins with the words: "We drove from the airport 4 hours, very tiring" or similar expressions. Indeed, this resort has its own bright "pluses" and "minuses". In this article we will discuss them in detail.
The main idea of the resort of Taba
The city of Taba is located in Egypt on the Sinai Peninsula right on the border with Israel (see map of Egypt with the resorts ).
Just 13 kilometers to the north-east is Eilat , but this is already the territory of Israel. 15 kilometers across the strait is the city of Aqaba in the territory of Jordan. Also across the strait is the city of Hackle, and this is Saudi Arabia (see photo on the right).
From this successful location follows the only great "plus" of the resort of Taba. From here it is most convenient to go on excursions to Israel and to Jordan. In Jordan, tourists go to see the city of Petra (see photo ). In Israel, Jerusalem and the Dead Sea are popular.
In 1969 during the "six-day war" the entire Sinai peninsula was occupied by Israel, but by 1982 the Israelis returned Sinai to the Egyptians. This concerned the entire peninsula, except the city of Taba. His Israel did not want to give anything, and only in 1989, by decision of the international commission, Taba went back to Egypt.
Taba never really became an Egyptian city, and dependence on the neighboring city of Eilat remained. Electricity and water here are still coming from Israel, which, by the way, increases the cost of recreation at this resort.
Characteristics of the resort of Taba
The first thing that most tourists complain about is the meager food in local hotels. This is not surprising, because their food is not grown in Taba.
If you look at the photos of the landscapes of the Sinai Peninsula on the left, you will not see wheat fields or water meadows. Sinai is an almost lifeless desert.
All agriculture in Egypt is concentrated in the Nile River valley, and food is delivered from the valley to the resorts of the Sinai Peninsula. Taba is located from the river beyond all other resorts in Egypt, and food problems here are more acute than in Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab or Nuweiba .
Another feature. Taba has its own international airport, but flights from Russia do not fly here. Tourists have to travel by bus from Sharm El Sheikh 220 kilometers about 3 hours. Considering that the bus carries tourists to the closer resorts of Dahab and Nuweiba, the way is delayed up to 4 hours and even longer. To look on the sides during this trip is boring, you are only waiting for such landscapes as in the photo on the left.
However, the airport is still useful to Russian tourists. First, there is a store Duty Free. Recall that imported alcohol in Egypt can only be bought in these stores and only once. If you forgot to do this in Sharm El Sheikh, then in Taba you can take this opportunity.
Secondly, if you want on an excursion to Cairo or to Alexandria , it is better to purchase an excursion with a flight on a local airline airplane. Fly to Cairo for 40 minutes, and go by bus for 6 hours, feel the difference. Above all, do not forget that for a trip to Cairo you will need a full Egyptian visa , not a "Sinai stamp".
The second thing tourists complain about is the almost complete lack of entertainment in the resort of Taba. There are no discos, hotels are almost no animation. The reason for this is simple, the resort is adapted as a "strong point" for excursions to Israel or Jordan.
Travel agents use for such resorts the phrase: "A place for a quiet family holiday." Apparently, it means that if you die from boredom, then immediately the whole family.
There are no water parks or attractions here. With children in the resort of Taba nothing to do. Local travel agencies are invited to go for entertainment in Sharm El Sheikh, but does it make sense to go 3 hours by bus for the sake of an Egyptian water park or a disco?
Taba is just one point of interest. Here is the island of Pharaoh, and on it the fortress of Saladin. Also from here you can go on the usual excursions for Sinai, but more about this later.
Hotels and Rates
At the time of publication of this review, Taba has 20 hotels. Only one "Helnan Taba Bay" is classified into 3 stars, the rest - 8 "fours" and 11 "fives".
The resort of Taba is developing very slowly, which is due to restrictions in public services from neighboring Israel. Neighboring Israeli Eilat is several times larger than Taba in size, there are more than 50 hotels.
Prices for holidays in the resort of Taba are quite high. If you compare with the cost of permits in Sharm el-Sheikh, then tours in Taboo are 25-50% more expensive. Affects the long distance, as a consequence, expensive transfer. High prices for food, water and energy also contribute to the increase in the cost of tours.
The conclusion is obvious
In Taboo, you should go only if you have planned an excursion to Israel or Jordan. If you are interested in beach holidays and entertainment, then in Egypt there are many more interesting resorts.
What to see and do
Taba has its own historical attraction and one unique attraction for tourists. The attraction is called "Salt Cave". This cave was built artificially from the salts of the Dead Sea. If you do not want to go to Israel to the Dead Sea or feel sorry for the money for this excursion, the Salt Cave will serve as a good substitute. It is believed that being inside the cave is very useful for health and heals many different diseases.
The historical landmark is the "island of Pharaoh" and the "fortress of Saladin". See the photo on the right.
This fortress is here for a long time. The guidebooks indicate that the first fortifications were built by the Phoenicians, which is quite plausible. The current version of the fortress was built by knights-crusaders in the 12th century. In those days, there was the southern border of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
In the 13th century, Tabu was conquered by the troops of Egypt, later Jerusalem was taken. The Egyptian Arabs were then headed by Sultan Salah ad-Din, better known as Saladin. In honor of him the fortress is named.
Excursion here includes a trip to the island by boat, inspection of the fortress and the local museum, for a while, when people can dive with a tube and mask. The cost of the tour is 50 American dollars.
Between Taba and Nuweiba is the "Zaman Castle" (see photo ). This is not an ancient structure, but a modern building, which is specially built here for tourists. This place functions as a restaurant with a swimming pool and a souvenir shop.
An interesting place not far from Taba is the " Color Canyon ". It is closer to the resort of Nuweiba than to Taba. The length of this canyon is about 5 kilometers.
European tourists are puzzled why it is called "color". We are used to really different colors - blue, green, purple. Here, almost all the surrounding situation has a sandy color, but with a large number of shades of different rock types.
The place is beautiful, but most tourists expect something more. This is the second most popular excursion in Taba. See the photo in the small gallery on the left.
Tourists come here by bus, but the last part of the distance to the canyon is done in jeeps. By the very canyon is already walking. A simple trip by bus and a canyon tour costs about $ 50. At the end of the trip you will visit the oasis and you will be able to communicate with the Bedouins. For greater security of tourists, this cheerful guy accompanies (see photo ).
In the summer months, dolphins sail to the area of Taba, which becomes another entertainment for tourists. Also, here there are whale sharks, but not every year. Their appearance strongly depends on the weather conditions. Recall that whale sharks eat plankton and do not pose a threat to humans.
If you like diving, and whale sharks have come here, then consider yourself lucky, quickly take a scuba diving and dive. Such a chance can be granted once in a lifetime.
In the resort of Taba there is a golf course, which is popular with tourists from Europe, but Russians are not in demand. In advertising brochures they like to mention that Taba has a casino. Gambling business in Egypt is not limited, and casinos are in many cities, including Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh.
Many tourists cross the border and visit the neighboring Israeli resort of Eilat. There are more shops here, shopping is more interesting. In Eilat there is an aquarium " Underwater Observatory ", an amusement park, an exhibition of ice sculptures, a botanical garden and a theme park "King's City".
To be honest, compared to the resort of Eilat, the Egyptian Taba looks bleak, to say the least. Do not even want to return back.
Russians can visit Israel without a visa, but a fee of $ 15 is charged for crossing the border in this area.
Another popular excursion is a trip to the Monastery of St. Catherine and to Mount Moses , such trips are arranged from all the resorts of the Sinai Peninsula.
Egypt's most explosive resort
Explosions in Egypt periodically thunder, but Taba in this regard is unique. There were two major terrorist acts.
In 2004, on October 7, an explosion occurred at a local Hilton hotel. 34 people died.
In 2014, another explosion occurred at the border crossing with Israel, when there was a group of tourists from South Korea. This time, 2 people were killed and 14 were injured.
In such sad statistics there is nothing surprising. Near Israel, where the explosions have become accustomed, no matter how terrible this phrase sounded.
However, do not consider Taboo a "hot spot". For example, in Sharm El Sheikh there was only one terrorist attack in 2005, but three bombs exploded at once, and 88 people were killed. By the number of attacks Taba is indeed a record holder, but for the victims this resort is by no means the first.
