Crocodile farm on the island of Djerba
The island of Djerba is poor in sights, the list of which for the most part consists of small local museums. Crocodile farm in the park Djerba Explore - a pleasant exception. It is always interesting for adults and children.
Judging by the information on the official site of Djerba Explore, the farm contains more than 400 crocodiles. All of them belong to the species Crocodylus niloticus (Nile crocodile).
Individuals of this species reach 7 meters in length and weight up to a ton. We did not see such record-breakers in the park, in the photo on the right, see the largest crocodile we found in the park, click on the photo to enlarge. But about the number of the figure of 400 you can safely believe, there are really a lot of crocodiles here.
This is the largest crocodile farm in the Mediterranean region, you can see the feeding of crocodiles, hold in the hands of small crocodiles, buy themed souvenirs for memory. About everything in order.
Where is this crocodile farm
Crocodile farm is one of three parts of Djerba Explore theme park. The remaining two parts are the Lalla Hadria Museum and the Heritage Conservatory .
The park is located in the eastern part of Djerba almost on the coast. The park is surrounded by hotels, it is a coastal tourist area of the island, which on our map is highlighted in green.
Some hotels to the park are easily accessible on foot. For example, Robinson Club Djerba Bahiya, Seabel Rym Beach Djerba, Iberostar Mehari Djerba or Hotel Green Palm.
Clarify the location of your hotel in relation to the Djerba Explore park, it may indeed be easier to walk than to go on a tour or taxi.
How to get there
If the park is far from the hotel, then there are two options. The first is to go on an organized tour, which is usually called "Djerba Hood". This tour includes a visit to the entire Djerba Explore park and the village of Erriad with paintings on the walls of the buildings.
The second is to get there by taxi. This option is much better, you do not need to wait for the collection of all the participants of the excursion from the hotels, and the time in the park will not be limited.
In addition, it will cost less, we recall the very low prices for a taxi in Tunisia . Even from the farthest hotel taxi will cost no more than 15 Tunisian dinars - this is the worst case when the driver is lucky in the long way, moreover, he will deceive with the night tariff.
Price of tickets and excursions
Entrance to the park costs 15 dinars for an adult visitor and 8 dinars for a child from 2 to 12 years. The tour costs from 20 to 30 dollars, depending on the greed of the seller.
The park is open every day. It is open from 9-00 to 20-00 from October to May, and from 9-00 to 02-00 from June to September.
Crocodile farm is open to visitors from 9-00 to 18-00 from October to May, and from 9-00 to 19-00 from June to September.
When it is better to come and how much to waste time
We recommend to visit Djerba Explore Park from 13-00 to 14-00. This is due to the time of feeding crocodiles - 16-00.
If you arrive at lunch, you will have time to see the Heritage Village and the museum of Lella Hadriya without hurry, and then see the crocodiles feeding, take pictures with the little crocodiles, take a walk around the souvenir shop and return to the hotel for dinner.
Large tourist groups (as in the photo on the right) are brought to the park from 14-30 to 15-30, and if you visit the park yourself, it is better to avoid meeting them in the Heritage Village. Therefore, we recommend to first look at the Village, and then closer to 16-00 move to Crocodile Farm. The museum can be left for "dessert".
If you are going to Djerba Explore as part of an organized tour, then be guided that around 14-00 you will be taken away from the hotel, and about 19-00 will be returned back.
What to see - the crocodiles themselves
Before you get on the crocodile farm, you will have to go through a small tourist market. Fortunately, there are no annoying Arab merchants who grab passers-by by their hands.
Then in the museum building on the first floor you need to buy a ticket. In the photo on the left you can see what it looks like, click on the photo to enlarge. A ticket with an orange strip is an adult, a ticket with a green strip is for children.
Then you need to go back to the street, go to the left to the checkpoint and show the ticket to the controller, he will make a small neat hole in it. Follow the signs with the inscription "Crocodile". Fortunately, the word "crocodile" in almost all European languages is pronounced identically and is written very similarly.
The road leads to the entrance, stylized as a medieval Arab fortress. It is behind these gates that tourists are waiting for four hundred terrible reptiles.
On the way, you can take pictures with beautiful local vegetation, the photos are wonderful. Look below the gallery of several photo roads to the crocodile farm.
At the end of the road, visitors enter the farm itself. At the entrance is a cafe and a souvenir shop, go through them.
But do not rush to the big reptiles, already at the entrance you should pay attention to the small glass on the left. Here you can see very small crocodiles. See the photo on the right, click on the photo to enlarge.
It is these crocodiles that after feeding can be even touched, and the service is free.
Large crocodiles do not please with activity, most of the time they lie completely without movement. Only sometimes they open the mouth. Even less often, one of them moves to another place or descends into the water. The situation is saved by the fact that there are several hundred of them here, somebody will definitely be active.
Some interesting photos can be found in the mini gallery below.
Many tourists stop at one place and just watch, waiting for the activity of reptiles. We do not recommend doing this, it's better to go around the whole farm, you will find many interesting things.
One of the enclosures is designed for very young crocodiles, you can call it "kindergarten", another pen for older crocodiles. See the photo in the gallery below.
On the territory there is an indoor pen, where crocodiles hide from bad weather. In summer this place is empty, reptiles prefer to luxuriate in the sun. Some crocodiles swim in the water. See another mini photo gallery below.
- Do not carry children by the shoulders, it is strictly prohibited. For this not fined, but the guard will make a warning and will demand to lower the child down.
- Do not bring meat from the hotel and do not feed them crocodiles, they can be fined for this.
- Be extremely careful when raising the child to the fence. Do not risk in vain.
Many tourists expect from this action of grandiose impressions - fights for meat between reptiles or something similar. Disappoint readers, because nothing like this happens. Crocodiles select only those pieces that fell near them. Below is a small photo gallery.
Feeding takes place at 16-00 every day. Have time to take a convenient position for observation. Crocodiles are fed not only at the central island, but also throughout the territory. Just keep an eye on the staff of the park, which carry trolleys with pieces of meat.
Photo with little crocodiles
Important advice! Photographing with small crocodiles occurs immediately after feeding, about 16-20.
It passes in a special small paddock on the right after entering the farm. This place is shown in the photo on the left, remember it. Having looked a little feeding, go there to be one of the first in the queue.
Otherwise, you can "get stuck" in the multi-meter line, because to hold a crocodile and want to take photos almost all tourists, and they are on the farm at this time will be several hundred.
Photographing is completely free, you can tip the employees of the park as a thank you. According to the majority of visitors, this is the most interesting part of visiting the farm, especially if one is in the queue one of the first.
The mouth of crocodiles is prudently fixed with a tourniquet, safety is 100%.
The official site advertises the opportunity to see hatching crocodiles from eggs, but how to get to this show we do not know.
Here you can see the skeleton and skulls of crocodiles, which is already interesting. An assortment of souvenirs: plush, wooden and plastic toys, hats and caps, dishes and much more. The price of a plush crocodile - from 10 to 25 dinars, depends on the size of the toy.
The goods on the store shelf are shown in the mini gallery below.
Near the store is a cafe, where you can sit over a cup of coffee or soda, relax and comprehend everything you saw. Prices here are 2-3 times more expensive than in the city.
