Djerba Explore Park
In the late 90's and early 00's tourism on the island of Djerba was actively developing: the construction of hotels for which the eastern and northern parts of the coast were allocated was in full swing. However, tourists want not only to swim in the sea and sunbathe on the beach, but also to have fun during the holidays, and there were very few attractions on Djerba, except for the El-Griba synagogue and the "flamingo island", there was absolutely nothing to watch.
Attractions had to be built. It was with the help of "tourist money" that the Guellala museum and the Djerba Explore entertainment park were built, which we will describe on this page. The opening took place in 2002.
What parts does the
The park consists of 4 large parts. In the photo on the right you can see the advertising stand hanging near the cash desks, there is a brief presentation of the main parts of the park.
The first one is a tourist market, which we'll discuss in more detail later in the second part of this article.
The second is an archaeological museum, which we described in detail in the review " The Museum of Lella Hadriya ."
The third is the so-called "Heritage Village", where you can see the classic Djerbian mensel, the house-khauch and the way of life of the Djerbians in the old days. About him, we described in detail in the article " Djerba Heritage ".
The fourth part is a crocodile farm, which is the most popular among tourists. Here contain more than 400 crocodiles. About this place, we told in detail in the review " Crocodile farm on Djerba ."
See the scheme of the park from the official site .
All this can be seen in one place and one ticket, which is very convenient for tourists. It is easily accessible from any hotel on the island.
Where to find and how to get there
Djerba Explore Park was created for tourists and tourists, and its location was selected accordingly.
It is located right in the center of the tourist zone in the eastern part of Djerba Island near the city of Midun. On the map on the left, see the mutual location of the park and tourist area (highlighted in green).
From some hotels here you can walk, specify the location of your hotel, we recommend for this map Google.
From other hotels it is easier to get there, because the prices for trips to a taxi in Tunisia are not high. Tell the driver the phrase "Djerba Explorer", he immediately understands the destination. The trip will cost no more than 15 Tunisian dinars (the worst case, when the driver will take the laps from the farthest hotel), the journey time does not exceed 20 minutes.
Another option is to get an excursion, usually called "Djerba Explore" or "DjerbaHood". This excursion includes a visit to the Djerba Explore Park and a trip to the village of Erriad with a view of the DjerbaHood paintings.
Price of tickets and excursions
The price of the tour - from 20 to 35 US dollars, depends on the greed of the seller of excursions. Children under 2 years traveling free of charge, the price for children (from 2 to 12 years) - from 11 to 18 dollars. The price of the ticket to the park is included in the tour price.
Tickets to the park are: adult - 15 dinars, children - 8 dinars. The ticket is one, that is, you pay for a visit to the museum, the heritage village and the crocodile farm, and you can not buy a ticket to one of these places. In the photo on the right you can see what the tickets look like: with a green strip - for children, with an orange - for an adult.
Of course, no ticket is needed to visit the tourist market.
The tourist market operates: in the summer (from June 1 to September 30) from 9:00 am to 2:00 am in the winter (from October 1 to May 31) from 9:00 to 20:00 pm.
The rest of the park's facilities are in operation: in summer (from June 1 to September 30) from 9:00 to 19:00, in winter (from October 1 to May 31) from 9:00 to 18:00 pm.
The park works without a weekend, even on Friday (the holy day of Muslims) is open all day.
How much time to plan
The village of the heritage "Djerba Heritage" can be seen without haste for half an hour. The museum and crocodile farm will take the same time.
In the tourist market (pictured left) in cafes and restaurants you can spend at least the entire vacation.
If you quickly walk through all the sites of the Djerba Explore park, then the visit will take about an hour. If you like the souvenir shops, slowly walk through the museum and linger, contemplating leisurely crocodiles, then plan two hours. But in planning the time of visiting Djerba Explore there is one important nuance, which we will describe in detail.
When is it better to come
Every day at 4 pm, crocodiles are fed here, which is an important part of the entertainment program for tourists. After feeding, a free photo session with small crocodiles is arranged. I have to adjust my visit to these events.
If you are going to come to Djerba Explore yourself, we recommend to arrive by 13:00 or 13:30. From 14:00 large tourist groups come here to come here, meetings with which it is better to avoid. You will have time to see the village of the heritage "Djerba Heritage" before the arrival of crowds of tourists, then you will be able to see the crocodile farm before they come. Then you can either walk around the museum until 4:00 pm or just wait for that time on the farm.
Tourist market, it's a Berber village
The tourist market is near each landmark, but in Djerba Explore it is officially integrated into the park itself. It is called "Djerba Explore Village", the buildings are made in the traditional Tunisian style.
The market consists of souvenir shops, clothing stores (pictured right) and several cafes. This place is convenient for guests of neighboring hotels, they can come here for souvenirs on foot, you do not need to go anywhere. For the rest it is not very valuable, as the prices are quite high, it's easier to take a taxi to Midun and buy Tunisian souvenirs and gifts in Carrefour and the market nearby.
More valuable and interesting for tourists is a souvenir shop on a crocodile farm where you can buy plush crocodiles, theme park caps and other memorabilia that you can not buy anywhere else.
Prices in clothing stores are also not encouraging, in city stores in Midoun, similar things are cheaper, sometimes 2 times.
The only real benefit of the market is cafes and restaurants, where you can sit in silence with a cup of aromatic coffee, have a snack with fresh brioche or pastries, treat yourself to sweets . Of course, there will not be time for an organized excursion, but if you come alone, you can sit in a cafe, enjoy a measured atmosphere.
Closest to the museum is "The Grand Cafe" with a large terrace (pictured left), here are delicious coffee, tea, pastries and ice cream. Ice cream is made in the most bizarre forms, for example, in the form of a clown figure, children will be delighted. In the evening on this terrace Tunisian music evenings are arranged.
Two more restaurants provide the opportunity to fully dine or have dinner. The first one is called "The Food Corner", where you can enjoy Tunisian cuisine. The second one is called "The Faenza", there is a real chef from Italy, and the menu includes the most popular and interesting Italian dishes: many kinds of pasta, ravioli , lamb.
