In Tunisia with a child
Families with children like to travel and rest at resorts no less than others. But going on vacation with a child, you need to consider many features of the country. In this article we will talk about what to look for and what to do before going to the resorts of Tunisia.
In Tunisia in hotels they love the dishes of their national cuisine, and the Tunisian cuisine has important features. Some common ingredients here can cause allergies.
About food in hotels read our reviews " Than fed in the hotels of Tunisia " and " Tunisian cuisine ".
On olive oil
Almost all the dishes on the buffet at the hotel in Tunisia will contain olive oil. Even in mashed potatoes, Tunisians add olive oil, and not milk, as is customary here. Even tuna and other fish in canned food are filled with olive oil.
Of course, the allergy to olive oil in children is a very rare phenomenon. But anyway, we advise you to be safe and check the child's reaction.
If there is a reaction to olive oil, then the child from the buffet can only eat fruit, fresh vegetables and bread. In this case, we can advise only to take a stock of food with you, preferably in the form of canned cereals.
Allergy to tomatoes - this is often enough a phenomenon in Russian children. In Tunisia tomatoes and tomato paste are very cheap, and Tunisian cooks add them to half the dishes. On the prices of food we spoke in our review " Prices for food in Tunisia ."
Check if the child has an allergic reaction to tomatoes. If there is a reaction, you will have to choose carefully dishes for him on the buffet. Principle: "Everything that has a shade of red is impossible".
Or use the previously proposed method - take canned food with you, and give the child from the buffet only baked goods, vegetables and fruits.
Tunisian cuisine is the most acute in the Mediterranean. The basis of the sharpness of local dishes is the national sauce "Harissa", read about our article " Sauce and Seasoning Harissa ".
From a quarter to a third of the dishes on the buffet will be sharp. I'll have to try the dishes myself before giving the baby.
Dairy products in Tunisia
Milk in Tunisia does not differ from Russian. Milk is almost always on the buffet, you can buy it in stores. By the way, in Tunisia milk is even cheaper than in Russia.
But dairy products in Tunisia are very different from ours. The taste of most tourists, Tunisian yogurt, cottage cheese and cheese are not suitable for food. Here, other enzymes are used to produce fermented milk products.
If you fly to Tunisia with a very small child, then you need to take dairy food, because milk is an important source of calcium, a pledge of good growth of the bones, joints and teeth of the baby.
To take children's yogurt and curds with itself is of no sense, while waiting for the flight, flight and a trip to the hotel they will simply deteriorate. On the flight time, we talked in the review " How to fly to Tunisia ", and the time of transfer to the hotels resulted in the article " Map of Tunisia with airports and resorts ."
In addition, mini-refrigerators in hotels are chronically faulty. In Tunisia there is a big problem with the repair of all machinery.
There are alternatives to perishable cottage cheese and yogurt. Firstly, it is fresh milk in Tunisia or a child "long-playing" from Russia ( see photo ). The second option is a mixture of mashed potatoes with cottage cheese ( see photo ) or cream ( see photo ).
For a long time in Tunisia, there was no baby food at all, but more and more women are working and they do not have time to cook. The past 5 years, the market for baby food in Tunisia has grown at a tremendous pace.
Now (note: this article was published in 2018), baby food is on shelves in large stores, but not in all. That is, we can not give guarantees that it will be at the resort of your holiday in the supermarket. In addition, Tunisian or French baby food may be unusual for a young child.
For these reasons, we still recommend taking a full set of baby food with you from Russia. On the day you need about 1 kg, that is, for a 7-day vacation you need to take 7 kg of weight. Usually, on flights to luggage for one person you can take 23 kg. Agree, to allocate 7 kilograms in luggage - scanty payment for the health of the baby.
By the way, the weight of baby food can be reduced. Do not take mashed potatoes in a glass container, take it in a soft package (see the photo next, click on the photo to enlarge), the weight is clearly less. Vegetable purees in soft packaging are rare, but you can find ( see photo ), there would be a desire.
Meat purees are almost always sold in glass jars, but are also found in tin, for example, under the brand "Theme" ( see photo ). A metal jar weighs less and does not break.
Dry porridge in the factory is packaged in bags, and then in cardboard boxes. Boxes thrown away, take with them only bags, so save a place in suitcases.
Pampers and other baby products
In Tunisia diapers, oil, powders and other children's products can be found without problems either in pharmacies, or in large supermarkets Carrefour , Monoprice or Shop Generale . Just sit in a taxi and tell the driver the phrase "Carfur Monopriks supermarket", he will understand where to go.
Pampers of Tunisian or French origin, quality worthy. There is no point in taking the full stock with you, take a little for the first couple of days.
Do not hesitate to ask the hotel staff at the reception desk about where to find the nearest supermarket. Believe me, they are asked every day, they know exactly where to look for diapers.
Attention! Dangerous roads
In Tunisia, huge problems with non-compliance with traffic rules, the country has terrible statistics of car accidents. Some hotels even posted stands with a warning to guests (see the photo on the left, click on the photo to enlarge).
In detail about this problem we spoke in the review " What not to do in Tunisia ".
Keep children away from roads and cars!
Tap water in Tunisia can not drink, maximum - brush your teeth. Only for children this is not obvious.
Children we recommend giving only bottled water, you can fully boil it for full confidence. For this, as well as for making porridges, tea or coffee, we recommend that you bring a small reboiler with you. There may not be a kettle in the room. A boiler is not heavier than 100 grams, costs within 100 rubles ( see photo ).
The southern sun
The scorching Tunisian sun can cause burns, whose treatment is not covered by travel insurance . Especially the problem is actual in the hottest July and August, read our review " Weather in Tunisia ".
For children, we recommend sunscreens and oils with SPF 50 or 60 (see the photo on the right, click on the photo to enlarge). In the early days in Tunisia, try to minimize the time the child is in the sun. Keep a child in the headdress.
In Tunisia, Russians will have to meet new bacteria for their organism. Immunity even an adult may not be ready for this, and children will be the first to suffer from this problem.
To admit to itself new Tunisian bacteria it is necessary gradually. Therefore, take antibacterial napkins with you and in the first days try to wipe the cutlery and plates in the restaurant, and preferably all the items that the child uses. In a few days you can stop this practice.
Many tourists complain about the poor quality of washing dishes and appliances in some hotels. In this case, antiseptic wipes are very useful.
4 hours flight to Tunisia can become a serious test for a child. Try to entertain him so that time flies by unnoticed for both.
We recommend to stock up in advance with some small and cheap toys that are new to the child. Just ordinary items with which the child has not dealt yet will suffice, if only the objects were safe for him - stationery trifles, stickers, small board games.
The main thing is do not dump all these items on the table to the child at the same time. Take out one by one, so it will be much more interesting.
A vacation in Tunisia is a serious change of the situation - it is stress for the child. Take with you a few favorite toys - a typewriter, a doll, a teddy rabbit or a bear. So the child will be much more comfortable on vacation.
Follow these simple rules, and the Tunisian vacation will take place "five points out of five possible."
