Map of Tunisia with resorts and cities
In Tunisia a wide choice of resorts, many tourists are lost when choosing. In this review, try to understand the Tunisian resorts from a geographical point of view.
All resorts in Tunisia are conventionally divided into three large groups - Northern Tunisia (on the map on the right is highlighted in orange), Southern Tunisia (highlighted in yellow) and the Capital Region (highlighted in purple).
Two resorts in the north of the country - Tabarka and Bizerte are not included in these groups, we'll talk about them in detail, although these resort regions are not popular with Russian tourists.
Weather and season
It is important to know! At all resorts in Tunisia, the beach season starts at the end of April and ends at the end of October. In terms of weather, the difference is "cheap", read in detail in the article "The weather in Tunisia by months ." This factor should not be taken into account when choosing, do not "load" your head with unnecessary thoughts.
Let's start with the South Tunisia group, which is rapidly gaining now (note: the article was published in 2017) popularity among Russians.
In the south there are only three resorts - Djerba Island, Zarzis and Gabes. This is the youngest group of resorts in the country, tourism on Djerba began to develop only in the 60s of the XX century. The only international airport in the region - "Djerba-Zarzis Airport" is located on the island of Djerba.
Travel time from the airport to the hotels can be found in the table below.
| Djerba Island || Zarzis || Gabes |
| 20-35 km || 50-55 km || 120 km |
| 20-30 min || About an hour || Two hours + (delay) |
Important notice about the time of transfer to the hotels of the Gabes resort! To get from the island of Djerba to the mainland, you either need to sail by ferry from the pier of the city of Ajim, or go along the Roman road - a long mound along which a highway is laid. In the first case, you have to wait for the ferry (up to 30 minutes of waiting), with the second method you have to make a hook in 60 kilometers (an hour's drive).
Resorts of Southern Tunisia
The center of tourism in this region is the island of Djerba. About a third of the coast on the island is allocated for the hotel line. There are more than 50 large hotels and innumerable guest houses, mini-hotels and apartments for rent.
The island of Djerba is also convenient for an abundance of interesting local sights. Here is the ancient synagogue of El-Griba , tourists are interested in the large local Guellala museum , ceramics workshops and street-art project DjerbaHood . Tourist entertainment No. 1 on Djerba is the Djerba Explore theme park , which consists of three parts: the Lella Hadriya Museum , the Djerba Heritage Menzel and the Crocodile Farm .

Zarzis is a small resort on the mainland. There are only a dozen hotels, almost no infrastructure for tourists. Of the merits of Zarzis, you can note the magnificent sandy beaches, several interesting sights of local importance and the beautiful architecture of the city.

Gabes is a resort-baby, after all beach hotels here began to build only a decade ago. Russian tourists are rarely in Gabes, for this reason we do not have a separate article on Gabes on the site.
In Gabes you can see the interesting archaeological museum and the mosque Zhara with the painted minaret (pictured left).
The main advantage of Gabes is the most southern city of the country, where the branch of the railway reaches, and from here you can go to many sights yourself, about which read our article " Trains and railways of Tunisia ".
Advantages and disadvantages of Southern Tunisia
The main advantage is the proximity of the Sahara desert and its main attractions. From here it is convenient to travel to Tatooan, Oasis Ksar Gilan, Shennini and Matmata. The main drawback is the inaccessibility of the rest of the country's sights.
The Capital Region
Resorts near the capital (Tunisia) are attractive for independent tourists from Europe, Russians prefer package tours and here are rare. If you get to Tunisia on your own, the plane sits at the capital's Tunis-Carthage airport and it takes no more than 20 minutes to go to the hotel with a Tunisian taxi , the price of the trip will not exceed 15 Tunisian dinars .
Resorts of the Capital Region
The main tourist center of the Capital Region is Gammarth, a small suburb of the capital with a dozen hotels, most of which are "five".
In Gammarth wonderful beaches and developed tourist infrastructure - many restaurants, cafes, shops and tourist offices.
Read in detail in our article " Gammarth Resort ".
The rest of the resorts in the Capital Region: Serdia Beach and La Gulette, each with no more than a dozen hotels, rather, they are not resorts, but a group of hotels.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Capital Region
The main advantage is easy accessibility of all the capital's sights. We catch a taxi and cheaply reach Carthage or Sidi Bou Said . Especially valuable for Russian tourists is the opportunity to get to the Bardo museum , where Russian tour operators rarely arrange excursions. Walking along the Avenue of Habib Bourguiba or the medina of the city of Tunis can be as much as the soul wants.
The main drawback - this is a meager choice of hotels, because the land for construction of hotels is expensive, and there is not enough space. Hence, there is another drawback - a weak infrastructure in hotels. If the hotel has one swimming pool, it's already good to not count on tennis courts or basketball courts.
It is in Northern Tunisia that most resorts are, and many of them are famous throughout the world.
The region is served immediately by two airports - "im. Habib Bourguiba "in Monastir and" Enfida-Hammamet "airport in Enfida. Attention! When buying a ticket to North Tunisia, be sure to check the airport of arrival . Choose a tour in which the plane will land at the nearest airport to the resort.
Travel time to hotels from the airport of Monastir ("Habiba Bourguiba"):
| Nabeul || Hammamet || Yasmin Hammamet || El Kantaoui || Sousse || Monastir || Mahdia |
| 120 km || 110 km || 95 km || 30 km || 15 km || 0-5 km || 50 km |
| 2 hours || 1 hour 50 min || 1 hr 35 min || 30 min || 15 minutes || up to 10 min || 50 min |
Travel time to hotels from Enfid Airport (Enfida-Hammamet):
| Nabeul || Hammamet || Yasmin Hammamet || El Kantaoui || Sousse || Monastir || Mahdia |
| 70 km || 60 km || 40 km || 30 km || 40 km || 60 km || 120 km |
| 1 hour 10 min || 1 hour || 40 min || 30 min || 40 min || 1 hour || 2 hours |
If you look at the map, then "Northern Tunisia" is by no means the most northern tourist area, because the Capital Region is located further north. The name "Northern Tunisia" has developed historically and continues to this day.

There are three more cities in Tunisia that may be of interest to tourists, but of which we have not yet mentioned.
The second largest city in the country after the capital. Sfax is an industrial and financial center, but not a resort. Like the resorts of the Capital Region, the resort of Bizerte is popular with independent European tourists. From the city of Tunisia in Bizerte a railway branch is laid, it is not more than an hour to go by it. For more details, see our " Trains in Tunisia " review.
In Bizerta, about two dozen full-fledged hotels and many mini-hotels, guest houses and rented apartments. By the standards of Tunisia, this is a large city - a population of about 150,000 inhabitants.
It is very popular with Europeans resort with its own airport "Tabarka-Ain Draham International Airport". Charters from all major European cities fly here.
Tour operators in Russia do not arrange tours to Tabarka at all. Moreover, many European tour operators sell tours to Tabarka with the addition of "No Russians hotel" or "No Russians resort", promising clients a guarantee of the absence of a number of Russian tourists. However, the word "Russian" means not only Russians, but also Ukrainians, Byelorussians and in general representatives of Eastern Europe.
Tabarka is famous for its coral reefs, it is the main Tunisian diving center. The main local historical attraction is the medieval Genoese fortress on the island. In Tabarka the climate is unique for Tunisia, in winter there are minus temperatures here, and even snow falls.
