Nabeul Resort in Tunisia
The city of Nabeul is small - about 70,000 inhabitants, but it is famous throughout Tunisia. Nabeul is called the "Orange Capital of Tunisia" and "The Capital of Ceramics of Tunisia", the second title he shares with the city of Guellala on Djerba .
Nabeul is a small resort, rest on which has its disadvantages and advantages, which we will discuss in detail in this article.
The city is called in different ways: Nabeul, Nabeul, Nabul, Nabeul and even Nabil. The pronunciation is different in Arabic and French, and we are confused not only in Russia. In Russia, the city is interesting primarily as a resort, and the rules of pronunciation dictate the information bases of tour operators.
In Russia, the city is called "Nabeul", and the province (province) is called "Nabul", although in other languages the names of the city and the province coincide. Consider that this is our Russian unique tradition, but be prepared that in some sources the city will be called "Nabul" or "Nabeul."
The city and resort of Nabeul is located on the peninsula of Cap Bon. This is in the northern part of the country, 15 kilometers east of Hammamet, 70 kilometers south-east of the city of Tunis (the capital of the country).

Peninsula Cap Bon in Russia no one knows, but in the world he is famous. It was here that the British and Americans won the final victory in the African company in the Second World War.
In North Africa, the armies of General Montgomery (Englishmen) and General Patton (Americans) in 1942 forced the Germans and Italians under the command of Marshal Rommel. By May 1943, the Allies had ousted Rommel's troops precisely to the Cap-Bon peninsula, where the Germans and the Italians capitulated.
250,000 Germans and Italians were captured, which is comparable to the number of prisoners at Stalingrad. The Allies opened the way to Sicily and further to continental Italy.
Figures and facts
The city of Nabeul is the capital of the vilayet (province) of Nabul, but not its largest city, Hammamet is larger both by population and by area. But historically, the administrative center of the region was always Nabeul, not Hammamet.
The population of 70 000 inhabitants was fixed in 2014. Together with the suburbs of Dar Shaaban, Beni Khair and El Maamura, the urban agglomeration Nabeul with a population of 110,000 people is being formed. But more often it is common to unite all these cities together with Hammamet into a single urban agglomeration "Nabeul-Hammamet" with a population of 185 000 inhabitants, such agglomerations are called "bipolar".
A bit of history
In the era of antiquity in place of modern Nabeul was the city of Neopolis. Unlike most cities on the coast, Neopolis was founded by the Greeks, and not by the Phoenicians. "Neo" is in Greek "new", "polis" - in Greek "city". Accordingly, the settlement was called "New City". An interesting fact is that the name " Carthage " is also translated as "New City", but already with Phoenician.
Neopolis was founded in the 5th century BC, as the Greek historian Thucydides writes. The city is first mentioned in the Greek chronicles. During the Peloponnesian War (between Sparta and Athens) in 413, the Spartan soldiers found themselves on the banks of Cyrene (modern Libya), where they were given ships on which they sailed to Neopolis.
However, this mention does not tell us that it was exactly that Neopolis. The name was very popular at that time, there were a lot of cities with that name. Some even now stand out, pay attention to the name of the city "Naples", nothing like?
Neapolis quickly passes under the control of the state of Carthage. With the fall of Carthage, the Romans robbed all Punic cities, Neapolis was taken and looted in 148 by the Roman army under the command of Calpurnius Piso. After that, Neapolis became just a small settlement until the 7th century, when the Arabs came here. The visatists retreated before the Arab army and in 674 simply destroyed the remains of the settlement "so that the enemy does not remain."
In the 9th century, the Arabs founded a new city in this place, which was named Ksar-Nabeul. It is this city that we see now. No fatal events occurred here, the usual medieval reality of Tunisia - raids of pirates and nomads, expeditions of Europeans, periodic looting.
Tourism in modern Nabeul
Nabeul is a small resort, there are only 12 full-fledged hotels (with assigned stars), while there are no "five", five "fours" and seven "treshkas". The resort of Nabeul is considered intended for budgetary rest.
This resort is popular with Europeans as a destination for independent rest. There are many private apartments and mini-hotels, restaurants and cafes.
Disadvantages of the resort of Nabeul
The first problem is the long distance from the airports. Naturally, there is no international airport in Nabeul and is not expected. Tourists go by bus from the airport Enfida - it's 65 kilometers and more than an hour drive. Or the situation is even worse when you have to go from the airport Monastir - it's 125 kilometers and almost 2 hours drive.
An important conclusion: if you are going to rest in the resort of Nabeul, then choose a tour with an arrival at the airport of Enfid.
The second drawback is the lack of entertainment, there are no discos, nightclubs and amusement parks. We can say that in Nabeul equally suitable for children and adults - here everyone will be equally bored.
This defect is partially offset by the proximity of Hammamet. You can take a taxi to the Flipper Water Park, Carthage Land Park and to the discos in Hammamet or Yasmine Hammamet . The prices for a taxi in Tunisia are affordable, a trip to Hammamet will cost in the redistribution of 10 Tunisian dinars , in Yasmin - up to 20 dinars.
Advantages of Nabeul
Beaches are the main "plus", beautiful and pleasant to the touch fine sand (pictured right). The quality of the beaches in Nabeul is not inferior to Hammamet. In addition, there are no large crowds of tourists, as in Hammamet, Sousse or El Kantaoui , the beaches are free.
Most hotels have their own beaches with direct access from the hotel, no roads on the way. Important recommendation: clarify the situation with the beach in the hotel, in which you are going, in Nabeul there are a couple of hotels from which the beach is separated by the road, and there are several hotels in the city line .
There are a lot of local attractions, which we'll talk about at the end of this article. In addition, by taxi it is possible to reach the medina of Hammamet , the Flipper water park and Sebastian's villa in Hammamet or the medina of Yasmine Hammamet . In just an hour on the local train you can get to the capital of the country - the city of Tunis.
Another advantage is the magnificent climate.
Weather and beach season
In Nabeul, a pleasant climate, which according to the international classification is considered "moderate", in the summer the air does not warm above 31 degrees, and a constant pleasant breeze from the sea is always refreshing.
The season of beach recreation here lasts from the beginning of May to the end of October. Read more on our page " Weather in Tunisia - water and air temperature ".
The weather in this region has one feature - a high level of precipitation (relative to the rest of Tunisia). In a year, an average of 370 millimeters of precipitation falls here. In July, June and August, there is almost no rain, but in May, September and October, several days of rest can be ruined by rain, and even in these months there are real storms with showers.
Precisely a large amount of precipitation determined the economic specialization of the region.
Economy, what do people do
Tourism plays a small role in economic life. The main branch of the economy is agriculture, and more precisely, horticulture. In the Nabel region, citrus plants are grown, this is a region of gardens. Main crops: oranges, lemons and oranges (a hybrid of mandarin and pomelo).
Citrus fruits are exported actively in both natural and canned form. The food industry enterprises are located here. Also in Nabeel, flowers are grown: geranium, damask rose and orange flowers, which are used in the perfume industry.
Nabeul is a famous center of folk crafts. Most of all, the local ceramics, especially those painted with colored paints, became famous. Read more in the articles " Tunisian ceramics " and " Tourists in the workshops of potters ". In addition to pottery, here embroidery, weaving carpets, forging and chasing thrive. Now we are talking about handicrafts - manual production, heavy industry is not.
"Great pottery in the Oranges"
This sculptural composition (pictured right) is a visual symbol of the city of Nabeul. She depicts oranges in a vase - the two main pillars of Nabel's economy. All tourists consider it their duty to take pictures with her.
Punic Town of Kerkuan
All the cities of the state of Carthage were captured and plundered by the Romans after the fall of Carthage itself. Most of the inhabitants were enslaved, and settlers from Italy settled in the cities. The cities were rebuilt, and gradually all traces of the original Punic culture disappeared into them. Only Dugge left one Punic building.
But one Punic city was abandoned by the inhabitants before the fall of Carthage, and now this is the only example of Punic settlement - it's Kerkuan. This place is located on Cape Bon, 70 kilometers from Nabeul. Read more in our review " Ancient Kerkuan ".
Archaeological Museum of Nabeul
The museum is located in the center on Habib Bourguiba Avenue. Here you will find an amazing collection of artifacts from different archaeological sites of the Cap Bon peninsula - from the excavations of Neopolis, from Kerkuan, from Punic sanctuary Tunisut, a few Roman mosaics brought from Kelibia.
The entrance is 7 dinars. On Mondays the museum is closed, the rest of the days it works from 9-30 to 16-30 (from 16 October to 16 April) and from 9-00 to 19-00 with a break from 13-00 to 16-00 (from April 17 to 15 October).
Excavations of the city of Neopolis
The excavation area of the ancient city, now here you can see the ruins of Roman buildings.
Medina is part of the old city surrounded by a wall. As in many Tunisian cities, the local medina has become a big market, where you can buy souvenirs, local artisans' products, and in general everything that can be brought from Tunisia .
To visit the pottery workshops tourists in Nabeul are brought specially, this is part of the excursion programs. Naturally, tourists are brought here to sell us ceramics, not for entertainment purposes. However, in such a workshop there is something to see - huge cups and teapots, beautifully painted dishes and much more. And no one is obliged to buy anything.
