In most cases, minibuses in Tunisia are useless for tourists. It's even hard to understand where the shuttle bus goes, because there are no numbers on them, the destination is written only in Arabic. Example on the photo below, click on the photo to enlarge.
But there are a few exceptions when marshrutkas can be tourists useful. The travel here is cheap, which allows you to save a little, and you do not have to bargain with impudent taxi drivers. We'll talk about these cases in detail.
Prices and features
Minibuses are intercity and intercity. All of them are called in Tunisia by the word louage (louage).
The fare in the city is 1 Tunisian dinar per person. The current course of the Tunisian dinar, see our article "The currency of Tunisia ".
The fare on a fixed-route taxi between cities depends on the distance, sometimes from 1 to 20 dinars. Usually, the price of a trip by shuttle bus is 1.5 times higher than a bus ticket on the same route.
There is no timetable as such. City buses run at a certain interval - from 2 to 20 minutes. Intercity waiting at the departure station until fully filled.
Minibuses can land and take passengers anywhere, not necessarily at bus stops. You can vote anywhere in the road, the shuttle will stop if there are vacant seats in it. They vote in Tunisia with the help of an outstretched hand, just like in Russia.
The cars of shuttle buses in Tunisia are very small, if compared with the Russian ones. People 1.8 meters tall in the cabin is already uncomfortable. People with overweight in them closely. To understand the dimensions, see this photo, click here .
Please note that there is no luggage space inside. If you go with suitcases, then do not count on minibuses, only taxis. Taxi is inexpensive, read in detail in our article " Taxi in Tunisia "
There are yellow, orange, blue and white shuttle buses. It is not always easy to understand that this is a minibus. In the photo on the left is an example, when it is more like the coloring of an ambulance. Click on the photo to enlarge.
When planting, always clearly and loudly name the place you want to go. The driver is not against you to help and tell where to land, but he must hear you!
If you go back to the hotel, then loudly and clearly name the full name of the hotel. For example, "El Muradi Palace" or "Soviva Resort Resort". There are several hotels with similar names within the same resort.
Do not try to show the driver your All Inclusive bracelet. First, he may not know all the colors of bracelets. Secondly, the bracelets of different hotels can be the same color. Thirdly, it is clearly inconvenient for him to turn his head to look at the bracelet. Do not distract the driver, call the hotel voice loud and clear.
In Sousse and Port El Kantaoui
At the resorts of Sousse and El Kantaoui, minibuses travel to Avenue 14 Janvier along all resort hotels to the port of El Kantaoui, then along the main road of the resort area of El Kantaoui.
If you catch a minibus near your hotel in the resort area of Port El Kantaoui, you can quickly and cheaply get to the port ( Magasin General , Aquapark Acqua Palace , Park Hannibal) or to Hard Rock Cafe.
Theoretically, you can catch a fixed-route taxi to the Sousse medina, but this can be difficult. In 2017, only one minibus went to the medina every 10 minutes, it could be recognized by very small dimensions - the type of body "heel". You can see it on the photo next (in the middle between two other machines), click on the photo to enlarge.
From the hotels in the resort area of Sousse, you can go one way to Port El Kantaoui, the other way to the medina of Sousse. It is convenient to get to aqua park AquaSplash .
In any case, you need to know the direction in which to catch the minibus. Ask at the reception desk of the hotel, from local or other tourists.
When landing, always name the destination and look at the reaction of the driver. If he nods or waves his hand, inviting him to the salon, then he follows in the right direction.
In Hammamet and Yasmine
In the resort of Yasmine Hammamet, minibuses pass along the main street (road N1) and further along the Avenue Des Nation Unies. You can reach the medina of Hammamet . Near the medina is the local Magasin General.
From the medina you can go by bus to the capital to see Carthage , Sidi Bou Said , Bardo Museum and other attractions.
From the Yasmine Hammamet hotels, it is easy to get to Carthage Land .
In the city of Hammamet, minibus routes follow the Route Touristique and the Avenue Mrezga along all resort hotels. It is convenient to get to the medina of Hammamet or the Flipper Water Park .
Do not forget to tell the driver the destination and look at his reaction, otherwise you can leave in another direction or skip your stop.
At other resorts
Such a simple algorithm of action can be tried at other resorts. Catch the minibus and ask the driver if he is going in the right direction.
Long distance minibus
There are often. For example, on such a minibus it is possible to get from Suss to El Jem or to Kairouan. In this article, we will not talk about specific routes, as they are fickle.
The advice is simple. If you need to return to the hotel from some sight, and see the minibus, then ask the driver if he is going in the right direction? If you are traveling, sit down and wait until the interior is fully filled.
