The Deira district in the city of Dubai is famous throughout the world as a shopping center with huge shopping centers and famous markets of gold, perfume, spices, fish and much more. But Russian tourists have other associations, for Russians the Deira area is primarily associated with cheap hotels and tours in the UAE.
Indeed, in Deira, a lot of hotels from the gorgeous fives Hyatt, Sheraton, Hilton and Carlton to two and even single. If tourists want to go to Dubai cheaply, then in 95% of cases they get to Deira. For this reason, we are giving this area a separate article.
Where is Deira
In the north-east of the city of Dubai. On the map to the right, we showed the location of Deira. The boundaries of the city of Dubai are shown with a red line, unfortunately, the whole city did not fit on our map. The Deira district is shown in yellow, and the figures indicate interesting places for tourists in Dubai, you can see the relative position.
Deira stretches along the coast from the border of the Emirate of Sharjah in the northeast to Dubai Creek (a long natural canal, a sea sleeve) in the southwest. From the northwest the area is bounded by the coast, from the south-east by the road E11 (Sheikh Zayd Road).
On our map, Deira looks small, but it only seems compared to the size of the city of Dubai. The area of Deira is about 25 sq. Km. km, which is comparable to the largest areas of Moscow (do not consider New Moscow) - Metrogodok, South Butovo and Yasenevo.
Deira is considered one of the most densely populated areas of the city of Dubai. Within the area are located just 10 metro stations Dubai (7 on a green branch and 3 on a red branch). For a diagram of the Dubai Metro, see our article " Metro Dubai ".
Deira is part of Old Dubai - a large area around the Dubai Creek canal. On one side of the channel is the Deira district, to another area of Bur Dubai. Deira has always been the commercial center of the emirate.
The first and main drawback is the problem with the beaches.
There are no hotels on the first line with its own beaches in Deira. The public beach is only one called "Mamzar Beach", the entrance to it is paid for - 5 dirhams. The current course is in our article " What kind of money in the UAE ".
The beach Mamzar is located in the very north of the district, where the metro does not go. Get to it will have to take a taxi, the cost - from 10 to 20 dirhams in one direction, depends on the distance from the hotel to the beach. Read the details in our article " Taxi in the UAE ".
With such costs, it's cheaper to go by subway to a public beach in the Jumeirah area, which is what some experienced tourists do.
Some hotels provide a free bus and entrance to Mamzar beach. If you want to sunbathe on the beach and swim in the Persian Gulf without overpaying, we recommend to find just such a hotel. About the beach Mamzar, we will talk in detail later in this article.
Nearby you will see a map of the Deira area with the signs of important and interesting objects for tourists. Click on the map to enlarge.
The paid beach Mamzar is designated "P1", free "P2". On this map, red and green colors indicate branches and subway stations of Dubai, blue shopping centers and markets, purple attractions. Further in the article we will give references to the notation on this map.
The second drawback is transport.
Deira is quite far from Dubai's main attractions. If you are used to traveling on the subway, you will feel comfortable. If you prefer a taxi, then open the purse wider.
Dair of the rest of the city is separated by Dubai Creek. Through it, five roads are laid: the Al Maktoum Bridge, the Pontoon Bridge, the Al-Garhud Bridge, the Business Bay Crossing Bridge and the Al-Shindah Tunnel. All these fords are paid, this fee is called "salik", the price is 4 dirhams. When traveling by taxi, the passenger will pay for the taxi. That is, 8 dirhams will have to pay each trip to other parts of Dubai.
Of course, the amounts are not so large, but let's count. Suppose tourists rest for 7 days in a hotel in Deira. For these 7 days they took a taxi 5 times to the beach Mamzar and 4 times to other parts of the city of Dubai to see the sights. The total overpayment for transportation: 5x35 + 4x8 = 207 dirhams, which is about 55 dollars. Agree, it is unpleasant.
The third drawback is the composition of the population of Deira.
Most Russian tourists are afraid of Indians, Pakistanis, Malaysians and Iranians (pictured on the right, click to enlarge). Russians feel much calmer if they are surrounded by European people. Europeans in Deira are rare, European tourists are more popular in Bur Dubai on the other side of Dubai Creek.
Deira is often called "Mini India". In this area do not live citizens of the UAE, this is the place of compact residence of visiting workers. About the population of the United Arab Emirates in detail read in our article " Citizens and other population of the UAE ".
If surrounded by Indians and Pakistanis feel fine, then welcome to Deira. If in such a situation uncomfortable, then we advise you to choose another area of Dubai.
Note that there are no security problems here, any district of Dubai is safer than Moscow or St. Petersburg. The index "Crime Index" for Dubai is 19.5 (category "very low"), for Moscow - 46, for St. Petersburg - 43.5 (category "average").
The fourth drawback is that there is nothing to do but buy.
There is almost nothing to do in Deira. There is only one entertainment complex for children, a couple of parks, several attractions.
Especially bad is the case with entertainment. In the SEC The Deira City Center there is an amusement park Magic Planet. There are several attractions, gambling machines, children's labyrinth. The easiest way to get there is via the metro station "Deira City Center". At this entertaining program in Deira ends, not really started.
Pros of rest
The first and main plus - huge opportunities for shopping.
Deira has always been the commercial center of the emirate of Dubai, and now has not lost its importance. There are several large shopping centers and famous markets.
Of course, the local shopping centers are far in size to the Dubai Mall , but their main advantage is in prices. In large shopping centers in fashionable areas prices are always inflated. The assortment on the markets in Deira is worthy, in the photo below the shop window on the jewelry market The Gold Souq.
The second plus is the proximity to the airport.
Dubai International Airport is located directly on the border with the Deira district. It will be necessary either to pass a few stops by metro, or by taxi for only 10-15 dirhams.
Third plus - low prices for hotels.
If you want to go to Dubai as cheaply as possible, in Deira you can find a hotel even for 30-40 dollars per night. For this money you will get a full double room with air conditioning - not chic, but not worse than the rooms in the hotels of Egypt or Turkey.
Mamzar Beach (on map P1 and P2)
The only public beach in the area. It is very inconvenient for tourists - in the northernmost part. The metro can not come here, the station is far away.
You can take the bus C28, which zigzags pass the entire area of Deira. The fare is 3 dirhams. The bus runs at an interval of 30 minutes. It will take from 20 to 50 minutes, depending on the distance from the hotel to the beach Mamzar. The C28 bus is a cheap option for money, but awful in terms of time.
And the most comfortable option is a taxi. A trip from the hotel to Mamzar beach will cost 10-20 dirhams, on the way 10-20 minutes.
The beach Mamzar is divided into two parts - free and paid.
In the free part there are no sunbeds or umbrellas, there are cabins for changing clothes and a shower. The quality of these services is not guaranteed, after all the municipal beach.
The paid part is called "Mamzar Beach Park", is located on the cape. There is a beautiful park and beach.
The entrance to the park is 5 dirhams. Use of the pool is 10 dirhams. Umbrellas and sun beds - 25 dirhams. There is a restaurant with a scant choice of French fries and burgers. In the center of the park there is an amphitheater in which live concerts are held. In the park you can arrange shish kebabs. Drinking alcohol is prohibited, as well as throughout the UAE, read our article " Laws on alcohol in the UAE ."
On Mondays and Wednesdays only women and children are allowed into the park.
In Deira, there are four famous markets that come from all over Dubai and even from neighboring Sharjah, Ajman , Umm al-Kaivain and Ras Al Khaimah . Each market specializes in its products. Let's talk about each.
Jewelry market The Gold Souk (on map R1)
This is a bestseller for tourists. Want to see 10 tons of gold at once? It is this amount of gold that is constantly on the shelves of more than 300 stores in Gold Souk.
The fantasy of the master jewelers knows no bounds. Crowns, bracelets of any size, even real dresses of gold, necklaces up to an incredible size, figures of camels, turtles, fish.
To look at the variety of jewelry on the shelves is very advisable, but it is not worth buying gold here. Of course, the authorities of the city of Dubai assure that they strictly control the authenticity of all products sold and constantly conduct inspections. But think for yourself, who will first of all try to "shove" a counterfeit from under the counter? Of course, a tourist!
Opening hours. On all days, except Friday - from 10-00 to 22-00. On Friday - from 16-00 to 22-00.
Fish Market Deira Fish Market (on map P2)
The diversity of the life of the Persian Gulf is no less than in aquariums. A visit to the market is completely free. Some sea animals sold here even cause a great bewilderment among tourists: "Do you eat them ????"
In addition to a large section of fish, there are sections of vegetables and fruits. Here you can buy inexpensive quality dates. About them read our article " Dates in the Arab Emirates ."
The market operates from 5-00 to 13-00 and from 17-00 to 23-00.
In Deira, two fish markets - Deira Fish Market and New Fish Market. Go to the one closest, there is no big difference between them.
Spice market - The Spice Souk (on map P3)
They say that here you can find any seasoning that only exists in the world. Here spices are brought from India, Iran, Pakistan. Here is a very cheap Iranian saffron. The smells in the market are fantastic.
Despite all his color, The Spice Souk in Deira is gradually dying. Too much competition from supermarkets reduces the flow of visitors. Hurry up and see until it closes.
Opening hours - from 10-00 to 22-00 all days except Friday. The market works on Friday, but it makes no sense to come, some shops and counters do not work.
In addition to spices, textiles, incense, hookahs and souvenirs are sold here.
Perfume market - The Perfume Souk (on map P4)
It's not even a market, but rather a large concentration of perfume shops in the streets of Sikkat al Khail, Al Soor and Souk Deira.
Here you can find traditional Arab perfumes, and international brands of perfume. We do not advise buying foreign spirits here, the chances of buying a fake are great. Local perfumers can even directly with the buyer mix essences and oils to create an individual smell of perfume.
This is the best place to buy bahur and perfume on the basis of oil ud. About them read our article " Perfumery from agar - bahur and ud ".
In Deira there are four large shopping centers: Deira City Center (on map T1), Hamarain Center (on map T2), Reef Mall (on map T3) and Al Ghurair Center (on map T4).
The biggest one is Deira City Center (pictured left, click to enlarge) with a sales area of 121,000 sq. M. meters. Of course, it does not compare with Dubai Mall (350,000), Mall of Emirates (223,000) or Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi (232,000).
The main advantage of malls in Deira is not the size, but the prices. Prices are cheaper in all stores, except for those where the brand itself is forbidden to change prices. Yes, and in this case, the traders in Deira often violate the price policy and give less, especially if the price to discuss with the seller privately, without extra ears. Traders in the UAE have all the opportunities to give low prices, here only 5% of VAT (in Russia 18%). On the topic of prices in the United Arab Emirates, we talked in the article " Shopping in the UAE ."
There are not many of them here, nothing grandiose.
The Clock Tower of Deira Clocktower (on map D1)
The British newspaper The Telegraph placed this watch tower on the 17th place in the list of the most beautiful in the world. At night, it is sometimes highlighted in pink, it looks like it was just taken from the box of accessories for the Barbie doll.
It looks completely new, even a bit futuristic (in the photo on the right, click to enlarge). And you will not think that it was built in the distant 1964 in honor of the first shipment of oil from the UAE.
If you tell more precisely, the watch gave Shaykh Rashid his son-in-law - Shaykh Ahmed from Qatar. The clock was very large, there was nowhere to put them. Sheikh Rashid instructed engineer Ziki Homsi to design a monument on which to place these watches. So appeared the Clock Tower of Deira.
Now this is one of the symbols of Dubai, it is a symbol of the transition of the UAE to a new era of oil and oil revenues.
Ethnographic Museum Heritage House (on map D2)
This house was built in 1980 and once belonged to Matar Said ibn Mazin, a wealthy pearl dealer. The building is built of coral stone, which at that time was the peak of luxury.
In the house you can see utensils, furniture, household items. Look at how the rich emirates lived before the beginning of the oil age. When tourists see this, they ask: "If the rich lived like this, how did the poor live?"
Pier Dhow Wharfage (on map D3)
On the pier on the shore of Dubai Creek you can look at traditional Arabian dhow boats. Once such boats were used for transportation of cargo, both as pirate ships, and as floating bases for divers for pearls.
Boats do and now carry people through the Creek for only 1 dirham per person. You can order an evening walk with dinner, prices - from 70 to 100 dirhams.
